News Story
Afghan boys seek life in Europe: 08/28/09
New York Times; Caroline Brothers

My Summary
The number of Afghan boys fleeing to Europe the last two years has more than doubled. Young boys are pursuing their dreams of an education, which is unattainable to them given the current condition of their country. There are boys as young as 12 who are seeking to find a hope for their future by running away to Europe and living on the streets, holding onto a small hope in their hearts of getting even a high school education.

This story really drew me in, the capturing picture shown to the right of the article and even the lead itself was intriguing. “PARIS- on the edges of a Salvation Army soup line in Paris, a soft-spoken Afghan boy told the story of how he ended up in Europe, alone.”
Reading this story made me realize how people like me have it so good; we complain all the time about having to go to high school and even college. Yet, these young boys are pursuing, with the smallest sliver of hope, just a high school education that they can get a job with. To be honest, this story made me really want to do something about this situation, like going into Europe and opening some sort of mission to help these young boys get into schools, churches, and jobs.

  1. That sounds like a sad story... I sometimes feel like we don't realize how lucky we are to be living in the US.

  2. It was such a sad story. That's why I chose it, because I think we, and that includes myself, take this life for granted too much. You can read the story here if you wish: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/28/world/asia/28afghankids.html?_r=1&scp=3&sq=lost%20boys%20of%20afghan&st=cse

  3. I do hope that someday there will be world peace. This story is a great example of how much we could accomplish if everyone had access to the same kinds of education and privileges that can be used universally. Great choice for an interesting story!

  4. I think your summary tells us how this story has hit home the hardest. I think it really makes us think that these young boys could have easily been one of ours.
