preliminaries.

Hello all!
I am Carissa Parker and I am nearly 20 years old. I attended Anoka-Ramsey 2007-2008 and then took a year off to work. I am actually currently living in New York on Long Island. I moved here January 2009 to take a full time live-in nanny position for four children. I wanted to continue school while working and since I'm going to be moving back to Minnesota at the end of the year and I don't want to change my residency, I chose to take online classes from AR. I am very excited about this class in particular! Right now I'm just finishing as many general education requirements as I can. I am going to double major in photography and journalism. For me, both passions are such an expression of my heart - being able to capture beauty in a photo and express myself through writing is such a privilege and a joy. Another passion close to my heart is music. I listen to a lot of music, country, rock, punk, hip hop, pop, oldies, top 40 - but more importantly I make music. I play piano, guitar and violin. I write a lot of my own songs, especially lyrics, and I have many friends who are musicians as well that I write my songs with. Again, it's such a blessing being able to communicate like that, music is such a powerful tool that speaks to the souls of people universally.

One day I hope to be a magazine writer/editor. I currently have about five monthly magazine subscriptions. To be honest, I'd love to eventually start and run my own magazine that would be a combination of fashion, love, politics, religion, current affairs/issues, styles/tips, stories, etc. I am a little bit of everything kind of girl and I think that having a magazine that covers not only fun things like fashion, love and style but also important things like politics and religion is important and what more women in this country need and want, even if they don't even know it yet!

Well, at least I'm a dreamer, I may not get there, but I have the comfort of knowing I dared to dream.

That's about all for now.

Looking forward to all this class has to offer,
Carissa Parker

  1. Wow! That is so cool that you live in New York. How do you like Long Island? I've been looking at this school out there and I was wondering what it was like...

  2. First off I bet it is hard living in a different state taking online courses at a college in a different state... wow, I wouldn't want to try that. Other then that how is New York? I also love taking photos. It seems to be calming in so many ways. I play the piano and flute and would love to write my own songs, but I find myself lacking the time and creativity... When you decide to run your own magazine let me know. It sounds like something that would be an awesome read!

  4. You live in New York that's so cool, it's my dream to live there. You hope to work for magazines I think that is so interesting because I do too, I'm not really into writing about politics and such but that's cool that you want to make a magazine about everything.

  5. Carissa,

As somebody who is involved in photography, I gotta say that I really like that profile picture of yours!!!!! : )

Hopefully you and I can have a discussion on politics one of these days. I have a great interest in politics as well.

  6. Jenna- Really?! What school were you considering? I have so many friends here who have been to a plethora of the schools on LI. There are soo many. I had actually looked into several. I really like LI, it's a lot busier than MN for sure, but the change of pace has been nice somewhat. Still a Mid-West girl though, and I'm not sure anything could change that!
Shelly - Yeah sometimes it takes a lot of time and concentration with the music, but at the same time it is very therapeutic for me. I write a lot of songs based on strong emotions, especially love and anger. Haha for sure! It would be such a blessing to actually get to own a magazine for real someday, it's such a pipe dream.
Lauren, yeah I really care much about politics for a long time until I was old enough to vote and took the Government & Politics class at AR, my professor was very determined to teach us how to think for ourselves and be informed about politics. And I realized how much this country needs informed citizens, especially women. I think a lot of women would be interested if they were only informed. Politics can be so interesting if they're presented in the right format. And a magazine that has a little bit of everything might be exactly what people want or need. And it was always my dream to live in NY as well! I love it here! But I really miss my family!

Haha thanks Kevin, my boyfriend actually took that picture at one of the National Parks here on LI. It's beautiful here. I've taught him a lot about photography since we've been dating and I must say, he's learned quite well.
Ha ha well that depends on your view on politics, I like them and enjoy discussing them, but I'm not much of a debater (or in my mind, arguer!). I am a bit of a pacifist :)
Thanks for all the comments guys, sorry it took me awhile to get back to them all!

  7. Wow New York huh? That's awesome! Definitely a great place to get into magazines. Being a dreamer is the best kind of person to be, it gets you places. :)

  8. haha yeah it does. It would be a neat place to get into magazines, but I will be moving back to Minnesota in December just because I miss it a lot. I literally left my whole life there, all my family and friends, to come to a place where I knew no one and nothing and basically started from scratch. It was a hard transition and I honestly I really miss the quiet and laid back feel of MN. It's so beautiful over there, I think I took it for granted too much. It's like the saying, you never know what you have until it's gone.

  9. New York sounds like such an exciting place to live. You seem to have so many different talents! I think that it is really cool that you have so many different interest. I love your sentence about being a dreamer, I feel exactly the same way.

  10. It sounds like you have had a lot of memorable experiences already in your life Carissa! I have been out to long island a couple of times, I was surprised that there weren't nearly as many people there as I expected. It is very interesting that you are taking classes at such a distance, the beauty of the internet!
