Former Child Star Confesses Incest with Father

Leader of the 1960s pop band, the Mamas and the Papas, John Phillips, died of heart failure in 2001. This may seem irrelevant, it was seven years ago.
However, his daughter, Mackenzie Phillips, confessed a week ago that she had a decade long incestuous relationship with her father; it first started the night before her wedding, when she was 19. She claims it started out as rape, and eventually progressed to a consensual affair.
Her pop star father also educated her in shooting cocaine and rolling joints. She said she forgave her father on his deathbed, and realizes he was a very tortured man, and he simply passed down that torture to her.

  1. I personally think this story is very disturbing. Why would you teach your daughter how to shot coke and roll joints? I think it is disgusting that they had a consensual affair.

  2. Hi Carissa—
I like the way your lead introduced & set the stage for this news brief. Plus, you handled a sensitive topic well. Also, your news summary answered some questions I had, since I only watched a quick blurb on Entertainment Tonight.
I feel so bad for Mackenzie Phillips who was definitely the victim here. This explains why she has battled addictions & tough issues in her life. I hope that Phillips can look forward to more healing now that she has openly shared this dark family secret.

  3. It must be hard writing summaries like this without putting your opinion in it. Stories like this make me sick. You did a great job writing it though.

  5. yeah it always is. Maybe that's why I keep choosing such controversial and emotional stories, I like the challenge of having to remain objective, since that's always been the hardest
