Rebekah Phillips interview story
October 12, 2009
Parker, Carissa
Nearly ten years of playing piano has instilled several virtues in Rebekah Phillips’ life. In her first few years of taking piano lessons, she had opted to quit several times. However, her parents encouraged her to continue playing. Now at 17 years old, she said she’s learned that hard work and determination pay off in the end. To Phillips’, this hobby has played a significant role in who she is today. “It also has given me something to have confidence in and to feel proud of myself for.”
Phillips said it has been such a blessing in her life, and she feels it is her unique gift. It doesn’t matter to her how many other people share the same talent or skills. “It still seems to be a strong part of me and a part of my personality.”
She said that piano is also a stress relief for her. One of her favorite things about her ability to play piano is having the freedom to play whatever music she wants. “When I am able to simply sit down and start making music myself it is very meaningful and has a lot of significance to me.” Of all the things she does, it is her most meaningful hobby. When asked if her piano playing has influenced the way she conducts the rest of her life, Phillips responded by saying she has learned to appreciate certain things more, particularly music and musicians. It has also taught her a lot about patience.
“Piano playing is something you have to regularly practice and keep up with in order to excel. It is also rather time consuming.” However, despite that drawback, Phillips guarantees it is worth the effort. She says she wishes she had even more time to play. She is determined to continue playing and eventually passing the opportunity onto her own kids.
