Interview with Cassandra Pettit
What are your top five favorite hobbies?
I would have to say my number one hobby would be watching basketball; right now I am getting very excited for men’s college ball to start. I don’t even know if most would consider that a hobby, but it’s something I love and spend time doing. Some more hobbies include reading, exercising, and definitely shopping. My newest hobby is probably cooking since I just moved out of my mom’s house.
And of those, what is the one that means the most to you?
Probably basketball. My boyfriend has played forever and I’ve loved getting to know the game better and see how much hard work all of those guys put into the sport that they love.
How did you get involved in this? How old were you, what triggered your interest?
Well I played basketball in middle school for 2 years. But I was always more interested in watching, rather than playing. I had a friend force me to sign up so we could play ball together, but by 8th grade I was the boy’s team manager.
Did you have any relatives or close friends that were involved in it that made you pursue it? In middle school mostly all of my friends played basketball with me, which was a lot of fun. And a lot of my guy friends play too.
What is it about this hobby that really motivates and drives you?
I guess now I love helping my boyfriend, Jared, get better at things he needs to work on. I’ll spend time rebounding for him and things like that. I love seeing someone be so passionate about something.
What has this activity taught you? How have you as a person grown and become a better person through it?
Definitely I have learned to become dedicated and also that hard work pays off.
How do you want the world to see you when it comes to this activity? Do you want people to admire your work, or are you more of a low-key person?
I’m more of a low-key person in general, although this hobby doesn’t exactly relate to this question.
How do those closest to you feel about your involvement in this, any special piqued interest?
I know that I have gotten my family really involved with the sport. I’ve also made some close friends through basketball.
How do you wish to incorporate this hobby into your future?
I’ll continue to watch, wearing the colligate gear and all. And hopefully some day Jared can go farther with basketball.
How do you think it will continue to shape who you will become?
I think it’s just changed the way I do things I love. Jared has taught me that hard work for something you love is always worth it.
Do you think this is something you’ll continue for the rest of your life, or do you think it’s a temporary thing?
I’ll always be a fan for sure.
How does this hobby set you apart from the rest of the world, how does it make you unique, how does it make you, “you”?
Probably the people who I have met through the game have changed me more so than the sport.
If this hobby is a sport – if you could change one rule or element of it- what would you wish to change?
I would probably say the way officiating has changed.
If you could be perfect at any hobby/sport/activity, which would it be?
Well since I don’t actually play the sport, I wish that I had continued a little long with basketball myself.
Do you wish to pass this hobby/activity onto your future family?
For sure, I have passed it on to my family now, and I’m sure my future family will enjoy watching too.
