Seventh Story, session 25

PARKER, Carissa
Session 25: Seventh Story

Whether attending a four year or a community college, schools are always offering more and more clubs, organizations and ways for students to get involved. Hallways and food courts are enveloped with posters, advertisements and incentives clamoring for students’ attention and commitments. There rises a question: amidst the busyness of academic studies, student’s work schedules and family life, does being involved have an effect on students’ success?

Of 27 surveyed students at Anoka-Ramsey Community College, nearly 78 percent of students attend school full time, and of the 27 students, 70 percent also work part time. Only four out of the 27 students don’t work at all.

How many students are willing to commit to campus activities as well? Of the 27 students, nearly 41 percent are involved in some kind of campus activity. Does this affect students’ grades? Only four out of 27 students polled that they believe being involved on campus has a negative effect on grades. 12 students said campus activities affect grades positively while 11 said they believe there is no effect.

When students were asked to elaborate on their answers, those who surveyed said they believe there is a positive effect on grades amidst student activities; they generally believe that students who are involved in campus activities are students who enjoy school and therefore inclined to maintain better grades.

Whether a student is working, or involved in campus activities, 44 percent of students say it comes down to time management. They agreed that if students are aware of the time commitments, and realistic about what they can and can’t do, then both working and being involved at school can have positive effects.

  1. Great story Carissa! I especially liked the ending paragraph. What a great way to close! I had a harder time deciding how to close my story without being bias, but I think you ended yours very balanced.

  3. I like how your facts and statistics are in the middle of the story. You have a nice introduction that leads the reader into the facts in the middle of the story. Your second sentance is an observation, and you support it with your survey. Good job!

  6. Great job on your story Carissa! You organized everything so well. Your story was very easy to read because it wasn't just one stat after another. I liked how you summarized what the students thought too by explaining what the general consense was on their answers.

  7. Oh, I just thought that I would let you know though, in the third paragraph I think the 12 is supposed to be written out because it is the beginning of a sentence. Otherwise great job! (:
